Innocenti Lambretta Models

This product sold globally via concessionaires and produced under licence in many countries.

Lambro Three Wheelers

Innocenti produced a wide range of three wheelers over the years.

These were usefully employed all over the world for the conveyance of just about anything from ice-cream to steel girders.

Non Italian Lambretta’s

Wherever manufactured, all models produced outside of Italy were based on the original Innocenti designs as described under Lambretta Models.

From 1952 many Lambretta models were produced by an affiliate company (Lambretta Locomociones later known as Servetta), in Spain right up to the early 1980’s.

These versions of the Italian original generally had small differences in the engineering and some much bigger differences in the styling. Domestic sales were very good and a large number were exported around the globe. Some of the later ones even finding their way to the UK. A large number of surviving models can still be found.

A small range of the earlier Lambretta models adapted for local taste were produced under licence in both France and Germany. Examples of these are very rare and difficult to locate.

South America represented the biggest market outside of Europe for Lambretta scooters and was produced in four countries, Argentine, Brazil, Chile and Columbia from the 1950’s to the 1970’s. The history of these enterprises is very hazy and records not good. Various models including Lambro style three-wheelers, adapted from the original Innocenti plans were produced and once again not easy to get hold of as most stayed within the American Continent.

India

Although Lambretta’s had been built under licence for some years, it was the aquisition of the entire factory set-up by the Indian Government in late 1971 upon the lamented termination of production by Innocenti, that saw Indian scooters take off.

The entire output of the newly formed company SIL, (Scooters India Ltd), was based on the GP range and is manufactured to this day with many examples finding their way to the UK. Over the years many alterations have been made to the original specification.

Style

It is fact that whilst all models of scooters were created equal at the factory, many of them have been modified and improved in look, feel and performance by their owners.

Over the years up to the present, so many options have been available by way of engine modifications, accessories, paint colours and schemes since the introduction of the Lambretta in 1946, it is impossible to note them all.

All of the models produced could and still can be seen represented at any particular time subject to year of manufacture whenever scooterists meet.

Rejoice in the diversity and enjoy the spectacle which includes original ‘out of the box’ examples together with dealer specials and garden shed horrors. These all form a part of the scooter’s history, a never-ending story of the sublime and the ridiculous.

Scooter Users

Those that have owned and ridden scooters over the years are as varied as the scooters themselves. Originally designed for mass transport of all and sundry, scooters developed a double life as a fashion accessory which has lasted to the present.

They have always held an appeal to the racing community and new records are being set constantly taking advantage of the latest technology to make that extra few miles per hour.

The scooter melds into the decades with ease in the 40’s / 50’s as a way of getting to and from work, the job it was designed to do and later in the 60’s as a declaration of youthful freedom. Later still via a chain-saw or two being taken to the back end of a scooter as a symbol of rebellion during the late 70’s and early 80’s. Into the 90’s and a realisation that these machines are a thing of beauty and worth preserving and so on into 2000 and beyond with the E-bay generation of small traders buying and selling scooter parts for all their worth.

There is and has always been a social side to owning and riding scooters that transcends merely having this particular form of transport available.

Lively music scenes, clothing and other activities continue to this day with thousands of scooter clubs around the world. Many rally's and meets take place every year to which hordes of devotees flock without fail.

The scooter does and always has covered all walks of life, all classes, races, colours and creeds. It can go where your car cannot, it’s cheaper to run and it’s much, much more fun!
